Superfoods
When considering health through diet and how to eat for health and performance, focus is on a group of foods called “superfoods.” Superfoods are nutrient powerhouses packed with large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals.
One such superfood is spirulina (“little spiral”). It is an ancient food (microalgae) that has been consumed by Mayans, Aztecs and indigenous people throughout the world, throughout history. Spirulina is known for its very high content of vitamin A, beta-carotene, anti-inflammatories, complete amino acids, omega fatty acids, vitamin B complexes, chlorophyll and associated pigments.
AlgaGen, the premier Florida microalgae farm, offers a raw, fresh-harvested, fresh-frozen spirulina product called ZIP-100. ZIP-100 comes in frozen cubes, which can be added to juice, water, or your favorite green drink or smoothie.
CEO, Erik Stenn says, “We have been growing Spirulina in Vero Beach since 2008 and have a strain of Spirulina that is unique to Florida. Our Spirulina has adapted to the Florida weather and is very high in beta-carotene, anti-inflammatories and proteins. Source water determines the quality of Spirulina. Our source water comes from an artesian well, tapping ancient pure water that is very high in beneficial minerals. Our purity and quality is top notch.”
“There are numerous studies performed by the National Institute of Health indicating that Spirulina contains antioxidants, polyphenols, chlorophyl, amino acids, anti-inflammatories, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, immune boosting compounds, calcium/magnesium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin B complex and more within the context of a natural food,” says Stenn.
