Port St. Lucie’s Parks & Recreation Award Winning Healthy U Program

The City of Port St. Lucie Parks & Recreations Department has received two awards for its Healthy U program. The Florida Recreation and Park Association Awards selected them as the 2021 recipient of the Innovative Programming In Community Building Award. The National Recreation and Park Association Awards named the department the 2021 recipient of the Innovation In Health Award.

Healthy U is a series of conversations, held monthly, that bring together the community and local health care professionals to discuss various topics. All sessions are free, and available in-person for the first 50 registered. Each session will be available via Zoom and open to anyone interested in learning more on each topic. Health professionals, nurses, care givers, family members and those seeking guidance and support when dealing with the many challenges we face in life are all welcome to attend.

Healthy U sessions are offered at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. Remaining sessions scheduled for 2021 include: October 6: What is Bipolar Affective Disorder? Suncoast Mental Health who provides services in St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, and Indian River Counties will be the main presenter. November 3: How to recognize depression, especially during a pandemic and strategies to cope with depression; presented by Anne Posey of the Cleveland Clinic. And December 1: Understanding the nuances of the emotion of anxiety, when is it useful and when does it become pathological; presented by Tykes and Teens. Attendees will walk away with skills to build resiliency.
