Attractive Repellants
With summer upon us, and along with it, the seasonal increase of the mosquito population, the following essential oils would be a most pleasant alternative to the harsh chemical solutions so readily available.
A tall perenial grass native to Sri Lanka, cymbopogan nardus, commonly known as citronella, is recognized as having much medicinal value and, in particular, as an insect repellant. In the Encyclopedia of Essential Oils it is noted that before the application of the “ever popular” DDT, the method to rid mosquitoes was to have the area sprayed with cedarwood and citronella to control the bugs. Also, the scent will soothe, ease fatigue, and help to prevent headaches.
Lavender, lavendula vera, is endowed with many healing properties. A natural insecticide and pesticide, this fragrant, blue-violet flower exudes peace, soothes the nerves, and calms the mind as well as assisting in preventing mosquito attacks. Putting a few drops on the top of a sock is a “neat” way to get the kids and the family to try it. A little lavender rubbed directly into the skin is fine because lavender heals burns and help skin tissue. It is so gentle that dilution is not necessary. Lavender has many additional remedial uses so consider a separate bottle to mix with the citronella as needed to clear the air and fumigate the home.
Geranium, pelargonium graveolens, specifically is known to repel mosquitoes and gnats. In addition, this species contains tremendous healing values such as regulating hormonal system, a tonic for the nerves, a blood pressure regulator, and a lymphatic system stimulant which keeps the immune system charged.
These essential oils can be combined, used separately, or added with other oils such as thyme (a strong antiseptic), lemongrass (a powerfully intense scent), and peppermint (very invigorating).
