The Heart of a Man

“There goes another one of those electric bikes!” My husband, Jim, notices e-bikes and likes to bring them to my attention when we are out and about. I never understood the attraction until reading this month’s Fitbody column, The Exercise Power of E-Bikes: Get a Workout on an Easier Ride [page 28]. I’ve learned that contrary to my immediate assumption, an e-bike can actually provide some exercise value.
The author shares that both the e-bike and conventional bike provide moderate-intensity cardiovascular activity leading to a similar amount of heart-health benefit. Keeping our hearts healthy is a priority for us, so this might be a fun activity to explore. I may need to pay more attention next time one crosses our path.
Red wine, in moderation, has long been though of as heart healthy due to its antioxidants. Since red wine is a popular choice in our household, this month’s Conscious Eating column, Planet-Friendly Pours: The Rise of Sustainable Wine and Spirits, offers something to consider [page 20]. There are more than 70 additives that are allowed in wine that don’t have to be disclosed on the label. Some wine labels tout that they’re made with organic grapes or grapes that are farmed sustainably. “But those may still have a host of other additives or lots of added sulfites,” says Brad Kruse, a Milwaukee-based specialty wine retailer. I like the idea of finding naturally made wines for an even healthier option.
In this issue, we focus on men’s health. In our feature article, The Healing of the Modern Man: Men Redefine Their Emotional Power, we look at how more men are learning to embody emotional freedom [page 16]. In Healing Trauma: Emerging Therapies Offer Fresh Hope, we explore a variety of treatment options that can be combined to treat the mind, body, and spirit [page 22]. And in our online exclusive articles we reflect on The Gift of an Imperfect Father, consider digital detoxing in Unplugged Adventures: Eco-Tripping for a Digital Detox, and discover tips for humans in Misbehaving Dog Walks: Ways Humans Get It Wrong. This Father’s Day, I hope you celebrate the men in your life and incorporate some heart-healthy activities to share the love.
Happy Father’s Day,
