Spark the Holiday Spirit

My neighbor loves the holidays. She shared with me, “I really enjoy spending hours getting out all the decorations and preparing the house. Plus, deciding what to bake and pouring over recipes is so much fun!” I tried to absorb her enthusiasm as she described the joyful process so some of her holiday spirit would rub off on me. I only need a small spark because I’m in that sweet spot where the kids are grown, but there aren’t any grandkids yet. I’ve declared this my rest period before little ones bring back the awe and wonder of the holidays.
To keep the bustle to a minimum, I look for easy recipes that can be prepped ahead for stress-free planning. In our Conscious Eating column, I found inspiration in Merry Brunching with ideas to put a healthier twist on the menu. Registered dietician Jessica Levinson advocates incorporating all of the components of a balanced meal: lean protein, carbohydrates from whole grains, fruit and veggies, and low-fat dairy or plant-based substitutes. The recipe for Sheet Pan Protein Pancakes with Berry Swirl [page 24] fits the bill to be both healthy and pre-prepped. Some Cranberry Mimosas [page 26] that are low in sugar add a festive touch.
This issue is jam-packed with healthy holiday spirit. You can find easy-to-make recipes for your furry family members in Holiday Treats for Cats and Dogs [page 28] including yummy-looking Healthy Cranberry Muffins for Pets [page 29]. Consider ideas to help those less fortunate in Holiday Volunteering: The Gift of Giving [page 16]. Discover how one Florida community is shifting the paradigm of communication to produce insights for innovation in our feature article, Transforming Our World: Working Together for Meaningful Change [page 18]. And explore the healing power of sound in Good Vibrations [page 26].
In our Online Exclusives at my-NA.com, you’ll find tips on how to be eco-friendly while decking the halls in Sustainable Holidays. Jeffrey Rediger shares the Science of Miraculous Recoveries. And learn how to teach children the spirit of giving with ideas in The Best Gift of All.
This month, I hope you enjoy being together with your loved ones and make memories that bring joy and feed your soul!
Wishing you a healthy holiday season!
