Finding Balance After Trauma

We've all experienced trauma in one form or another—whether it's from grief, conflict, or deeper wounds like abandonment and abuse. While reviewing the articles for this issue, I found myself reflecting on the trauma of losing my parents and the profound grief that follows. I also recognize that the loss of one’s parents is part of the natural cycle of life, and that many in our community are dealing with far more profound challenges. Trauma affects everyone differently, and its impact can be long-lasting, sometimes taking years to heal. This month, we’re focusing on breaking the trauma cycle so that healing can begin."
Our feature article, Stopping the Trauma Cycle: Mind-Body Healing Strategies, explores how trauma—whether from loss, heartbreak, or violence—can leave a lasting impact on our physical and mental health. “Our bodies are different, and our genetics are different. How we react to stress and trauma are different too,” says James Greenblatt, a board-certified functional and integrative psychiatrist. Trauma often keeps us in a heightened state of stress, with cortisol levels running high, leading to a range of health issues, from heart disease to anxiety. Healing begins by addressing the root causes and integrating mind-body strategies for long-term recovery.
In my experience, healing is not linear. Applying a combination of strategies and modalities can bring us closer to balance. Our interview with Aimie Apigian we explore techniques for releasing stored trauma including somatic exercises, inner-child work, and simply finding a safe space within ourselves. Meanwhile, Health Benefits of Yoga: Resolving Trauma and Other Mind-Body Challenges offers ways to manage the ongoing effects of trauma. Yoga has been shown to calm the nervous system, helping to reduce stress hormones and support mental clarity. Yoga therapy, in particular, empowers individuals to stay present, moving beyond the trauma and into a place of healing.
Additionally, Emotional Healing as a Family: How Parents Can Model Mental Health Skills highlights the importance of teaching emotional regulation to children. Healing Power of Therapy Dogs shares how the unconditional support these animals offer can be transformative, as studies have shown their effectiveness in managing PTSD symptoms, regulating emotions and reducing anxiety.
Healing is a spiral, and with each turn, we move closer to wholeness.
Here’s to finding peace and strength on your path to healing.
