Snacks, Storms, and Silver Linings

Preparing for a hurricane is always stressful, but this time felt even more so. Maybe it was the extra layer of predicted destruction or the fact that it followed closely on the devastation of Helene. My way of coping was to stock up on food and supplies, ensuring I had plans to feed my family. My stockpile included snacks rarely found in my pantry—making them easy prey, devoured before the storm even arrived, leading to more restocking trips. Sometimes, it feels impossible to hold onto calm amid such chaos. For many, the storms brought not only anxiety but real hardship. Amid the challenges, I found the unexpected gift of extra time with my son. Ryan now lives in St. Petersburg, and this was his second evacuation to us in as many weeks. This unanticipated gift helped shift my perspective, reminding me how we weather life's literal and figurative storms shape who we become.
In Rising to the Calling: Earning Wisdom as We Age [page 18], Dr. Darcia Narvaez, professor of psychology emerita at the University of Notre Dame, shares that "wise elders are repositories of how to live a good life within nature, and not against it." She emphasizes, "After all, if you are not experiencing foundational joy in your life, something is quite wrong." For me, spending time with loved ones is essential to that joy.
Another source of joy for me is delicious, healthy food. In Blissful Bowls: Celebrating With Soup [page 22], we explore how seasonal soups can meld a variety of ingredients into delicious comfort food. With cooler temperatures making an appearance, I’m excited to try new soup recipes, including the Mellow Sweet Potato Soup [page 25].
As we embrace the changes of the season, this month’s issue is packed with insights to inspire well-being and meaningful connections. For dog lovers, Electromagnetic Therapy for Dogs [page 28] offers insights into non-invasive pain treatments. Reflect on spiritual aging with Carol Orsborn on Growing Whole Instead of Old.
