Less Stuff, More Magic

There’s nothing better than having my boys home for the holidays. With their busy lives and my own, it’s special to have everyone under one roof. When we’re all together, it fills my heart and soothes my soul—it’s the kind of gift that can’t be wrapped in paper or tied with a bow. This year, our family is shaking things up by focusing less on ‘stuff’ and more on memories. We’re planning a getaway with my sisters, brother-in-law, nephews, and niece. We’re excited to create new traditions, play games, enjoy great food, and spend real quality time together.
This sentiment echoes the advice from Soulful Holiday Gifts [page 20], where self-care coach Caitlin Ball reminds us, “Sometimes, planning to have no plans is a special treat.” Like a holiday escape, self-care gifts offer more than just a momentary delight; they nurture the heart and soul. Whether it’s a curated gift basket or an experience that helps reset and recharge, thoughtful giving is about investing in joy and peace—the very essence of the season.
My niece, who loves to bake, was already brainstorming what to whip up for our Christmas gathering. Since most of our family eats gluten-free, I shared how much easier it is these days to swap in gluten-free flours. “It has never been easier to make gluten-free cookies that taste almost identical to their gluten-based inspirations,” says Katie Wells in Healthier Holiday Cookies [page 22]. Recipes like Chewy Chocolate Chip Almond Cookies [page 24] and Chocolate Coffee Cookies [page 25] look like perfect options. I can’t wait to taste-test her creations!
This month’s issue is packed with inspiration to make the season magical. Practicing Sensory Skills at Home[page 28] offers playful ways to engage kids’ curiosity, while Click Local: How Online Shopping Boosts Neighborhood Businesses, an online exclusive at my-NA.com, highlights how supporting small shops can be convenient and meaningful. And for pet parents, Caring for Anxious Pets While We’re Away: How To Choose the Right Kennel or Pet Sitter [page 26] shares advice to keep furry family members calm and cared for during holiday travels. Whether you’re planning a big getaway or a quiet celebration, there’s plenty here to spark your holiday spirit.
Here’s to magical moments,
