Exposure to natural environments can result in decreased stress related illnesses, reduced healing times, a reduction in the amount of pain medicine needed postoperatively, fewer head aches, fewer sick days, and reduced blood pressure. In addition, it can increase coping skills of caregivers of the elderly and increase a sense of community spirit. All people can benefit. Studies indicate exposure to nature benefits people with dementia, psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and brain injuries. Benefits are noted among diverse populations such as people with sensory disorders, stroke and a multitude of other disorders. Being immersed in natural settings is outstanding preventative medicine for all age groups. Reports also indicate that health care costs decrease as does violence and crime. Interaction with plant-rich areas has a web like effect that benefits, not only human health, but the health of the larger world environment.
