Focus is defined as the ability to pay attention to a subject or a task free from distraction. Man evolved into the present form about 60,000 years ago. However, only since the beginning of the 1900’s have humans been losing their ability to focus as demonstrated by the epidemic proportions of ADD in society.

Although medication for ADHD eases some of the symptoms while it is in effect, it does not improve the condition of the brain or produce any recovery of skills. Safer methods of treatment exist that can improve how the brain functions for attention and learning. These methods can improve attention and learning skills at a functional level, which may reduce or eliminate the need for medication. Improving these skills can help your child thrive in school and have a more successful outcome for their adult life. These neurotechnologies are not just offered in big cities, they are available here in Brevard County. Check with your insurance company as some plans provide coverage.

According to a study published in The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, various doses of ginger were used to treat women during their first and second trimesters of pregnancy. Ginger was shown to improve the symptoms of nausea and vomiting compared to a placebo. Although the authors do not recommend ginger universally due to the questionable product quality of some commercial supplements, "it appears to be a fairly low risk and effective treatment for nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy."

Recent evidence suggests that sleep problems increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, a set of medical conditions (e.g., high blood pressure, high cholesterol and abdominal obesity) that may cause cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Now a new study in the journal Internal Medicine finds that sleep disordered breathing (SDB) — for example, snoring and sleep apnea — is closely related to metabolic syndrome in cardiovascular patients. The study involved 195 patients with cardiovascular disease, 56 of whom had metabolic syndrome, who underwent assessments for sleep disordered breathing. The results showed that patients with metabolic syndrome were more than twice as likely as those without it to have sleep disordered breathing.

The moment we are born we begin the aging process. We have the weapon to fight disease and aging with something called superoxide dismutase. We get half from our mother and half from our father and it’s our natural antioxidant that fights and neutralizes free-radicals.

Dear EarthTalk: The 2008 Summer Olympics in China are drawing a lot of attention right now for political reasons. I’ve heard, though, that one ray of light is China’s effort to make the event as green as possible. What’s going on in that regard? — Josh Rogers, Concord, NH

One of the very best ways you can help your body reclaim its optimum health is by practicing relaxation techniques. Did you know that everyone goes in and out of hypnosis (also known as an altered state of consciousness) on a daily basis? It’s true! Throughout the day, our body requires a certain amount of "down time"—time to rejuvenate, clear our head and reset our energy levels. In these times of stress and worry, our body may struggle more than ever to overcome the obstacles of less than perfect nutrition and sleep patterns, to help us keep up with the demands of the lifestyles we place upon ourselves.

"Chiropractic care for my child? Why? His back does not bother him." Chiropractors hear this all the time. All parents appreciate the importance of having check-ups for their child’s teeth, eyes, ears, nose and throat, but when it comes to a spinal check-up; they do not know it is necessary.

The study of Human Physiology divides nerves into various systems and categories. We have the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, the autonomic, the motor, the sensory and so forth. Medical science has made great strides in determining how nerves work and in developing drugs that enhance, suppress or otherwise alter the functioning of our nerves. Recent research has even suggested that radiant energy may be involved in neural functionality. Medical science sees mental and emotional health as fundamentally neural in nature and so it seeks to provide physical remedies.
