Bringing Integrated Medicine to Sebastian: Peter Holyk MD

Apr 01, 2011 06:38PM

Shortly after launching his private Ophthalmology practice in North Carolina, Dr. Peter Holyk found himself on a journey of medical mystery with his wife Pam. He an MD and she a licensed optician – both were already familiar with and entrenched in modern medicine and taking care of others. In late 1982, Pam was diagnosed with Epstein Barr Syndrome (i.e., Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia). Told by doctors that it was the worst case they had ever seen, she struggled for ten years as doctor after doctor told her there was nothing they could do. Unwilling to give up, Pam began researching heavy metal toxins and her husband, an open minded inquisitive man, checked out her theory. Holyk attended courses and embarked on an understanding of the endocrine and hormonal system to help his wife. He traveled extensively to learn from the masters in the field of detoxification and nutrition. As he learned more about toxins he began to notice a correlation between his patient’s symptoms and their exposures to toxins, be it in their careers or hobbies. His practice became so busy holistically that by 1998 he left his Ophthalmology business to dedicate himself to holistic medicine. In the meantime, Holyk himself was diagnosed with a baseball sized brain tumor. While most of it was surgically removed a portion remained entwined leaving the doctors to declare “it was just a matter of time.” Then in 1997 with a second health crisis as the catalyst, he decided “what was good for the goose must be good for the gander” and began his own detoxification process. Today he is tumor free and Pam is free of her debilitating illness. These personal experiences fuel the Holyk’s desire to share their wealth of knowledge with others. Today Dr. Holyk is one of a handful of allopathically trained doctors who have bridged the gap into integrative medicine. Holyk focuses his treatment on underlying causes rather than symptoms and chooses the least invasive, least toxic and least costly medical care possible. Preferred complementary therapies include nutrition, vitamins and supplements, biofeedback, and chelation. He works with natural hormones, allergy elimination (NAET) and Applied PsychoNeurobiology(APN). His patients appreciate having options and that a wide range of care is available from a well-informed, authoritative medical source. Continuing education is a way of life for Holyk. “You have to keep up; new studies are coming out every day – what applied last year may not be apply this year.” Holyk notes that our country favors trends and fads, however medically what is good for our neighbor may not be good for us. Individually assessing each person’s unique needs is key, otherwise they can waste valuable time and money. To his credit, Holyk has achieved a myriad of certifications and degrees including one of the highest levels of nutritional accreditation, Certified Nutrition Specialist. Awaking to a non-electric alarm clock each morning, serving others is what motivates the Holyks as they start each day. “We see so many people with autonomic systems that are almost shut down as a result of stress brought on by last season’s hurricanes.” Holyk works with natural hormones to address a variety of issues and not just for women. “Our adrenals burn out from stress and getting them functioning normally again can be a key healing component.” The Holyks can sympathize with the plight of their drained patients; located in Sebastian they too survived their share of hurricane damage. Many people expect to take one pill and have a momentous change. It often takes years to have our systems malfunction so it follows that it may take some time to get them back on track. Holyk sites a large portion of his work is being a detective. Listening to a patient, spotting clues to unravel the mystery from their life, and finding the root of a problem is what he enjoys most. Applied PsychoNeurobiology (APN) is one of his favorite techniques. It is emotional relief that reaches the cellular level to release subconscious blockages. This core level approach works with belief systems which can be a strong contributor to our health. “People must love themselves through the changes of getting back to wellness one step at a time.” Peter Holyk M.D., is a board certified physician. He received his medical training from Seton Hall, NJ, Tuft’s University School of Medicine in Boston, Moses H Cone North Carolina in Internal Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC in Ophthalmology. Post graduate training includes: Mercury and Heavy Metal Detoxification, Chelation Therapy, Oxidative (oxygen) Medicine, Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique, Neural Therapy, Functional Medicine, Human Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, EEG Biofeedback Therapy, Endocrine Balancing, Applied PsychoNeuroiology, Thermography and many others. His practice is Contemporary Health Innovations located in Sebastian, Florida. Call 772-388-5554 or visit www.CHIMed.com
